Sensitive Subject: Managing Increased Skin Sensitivity During Menopause

Explore effective strategies for managing skin sensitivity during menopause with Let's be frank…skincare. Learn about gentle, nourishing products and practical tips to soothe and protect your skin.

Navigating these crazy tumultuous waters of menopause can be challenging, especially when it brings unexpected guests like increased skin sensitivity. As hormone levels fluctuate, your skin, the body's largest organ, often signals the change. In this little guide, we'll dive into the world of menopause-related skin sensitivity, offering insights and solutions to help you maintain radiant, comfortable skin during the transition that we will all go through!

Understanding Menopausal Skin Changes

Hormones and Your Skin

During menopause (and ageing in general), oestrogen levels decline, leading to several skin changes. Oestrogen is crucial for maintaining skin moisture and elasticity; its reduction can result in dryness, itching, and increased sensitivity, which means it’s important to adapt your skincare routine.

Menopausal skin can experience thinning, loss of elasticity, and increased dryness. These changes make the skin more environmentally sensitive, again needing us to have a shift in our skincare priorities. Let’s be honest, it’s also a great excuse for some shopping!

Nourishing Your Skin from Within

Diet and Hydration

Your diet plays a huge role in your skin health. Foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins can significantly impact skin hydration and elasticity. Staying well-hydrated is also crucial as it helps to maintain our moisture levels and flush out toxins. So back to the shopping thing, grab yourself one of those bottles that keeps you on track all day with water. There are some calculations you can do to see what you need for your weight etc, but sticking to the basics of 2 litres a day is pretty good. And if you’re out having cocktails or a glass of pinot, do the 1 booze / 1 water tango. Your head and your face with thank you.

Incorporate foods like salmon, nuts, and leafy greens into more meals. These are not only beneficial for menopausal skin but also for overall health. There’s a reason all those Greek Goddesses looked so fabulous - that Mediterranean Diet is fabulous for our skin.

Gentle Skincare Practices

Cleansing and Moisturising

Shift to gentler, more hydrating skincare products. Let's be frank…skincare offers a range of products specifically designed for perimenopausal (when the changes begin), menopausal and postmenopausal skin. For instance, our "Soothing Aloe Cleanser" is formulated to gently cleanse without stripping the skin's natural oils.

It's essential to choose products that are free from harsh chemicals and fragrances, as these can exacerbate skin sensitivity. Look for ingredients (like ours) like hyaluronic acid, aloe vera, and shea butter for their soothing and hydrating properties.

The Role of Sun Protection

Protecting Against UV Damage

UV exposure is harmful to everyone, but can be particularly harmful to our ageing skin. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 is vital to protect your skin from further damage and sensitivity.

Remember, sun protection is a daily necessity, not just for sunny days, especially if you live Down Under like us. Whilst we don’t offer sunscreen (at this stage) we will let you know if and when we do!
